Kyōha Shintō - Konkō Church of San Diego (教派神道 金光教サンディエゴ教会)
The late Reverend Norikazu Yukawa arrived in San Diego with a passion to share this Konkō Daijin's faith in May 1, 1984. With his then wife, Sheilagh, the two established the Konkō Mission of San Diego. The San Diego Church is indebted to individuals such the late Reverend Katsumi Miyai, Mrs. Chiyoko Miyai, Madame Mitsuhiro Bandō, Reverend Masaharu Kikekawa, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard "Dick" Spies. These individuals in their own unique and distinct ways share the faith with others. The church would begin growing and helping those in distress.
Sadly, on June 29, 2002, Revered Norikazu Yukawa passed away. His second wife would become an associate minister of the church and do her best to care for the needs of the growing congregation. A few years later, she would close the door and disappear with the assets after selling the church property and items related to the church. This left the members in a situation.
Without skipping a beat, the Spies ʻOhana welcomed the church into their home. A room in the back of the Spies house was dedicated to the San Diego Church. Under the second head minister, the Reverend Roderick Hashimoto, IGD, services continued with the support of the Konkō Church of San Francisco and the Konkō Churches of North America (North American Diocese Office of Konkōkyō).
After a great deal of prayer, Reverend Hashimoto requested to the Konkō Mission of Honolulu, if Reverend Takahashi would take over the San Diego Church. It was agreed and on December 29, 2018, Takahashi Sensei arrived to assist with the San Diego Church. On March 19, 2020, Reverend Takahashi was installed as the third head minister of the Church. On March 25, 2021, to rid itself of its past and to start anew, the church renamed itself as Kyōha Shintō - Konkō Church of San Diego.
At present, the Church has received its corporation status from the state of California and is in the process of getting its NPO status from both the State and the IRS. It is also in the process of looking for a new home, while honoring the home it is at now.
